— The Universe as a Field of Tension for Self-being
The universe is not a substance made up of matter. It is a field in which countless Self-beings encounter, respond to, and participate in the unfolding of Zizai through local interfaces of tension.
What we perceive as “the universe” is not a fixed and complete entity. It is Zizai becoming manifest through particular relations of tension, appearing locally as a field of difference.
At every point of Self-being, the universe is not merely passively perceived. It becomes manifest through a particular configuration of tension, enters into relation with awareness, and generates further response.
This chapter explores the nature of the local.
The local is not a rupture of the whole. It is one of the ways Zizai becomes manifest through multiple points of tension.
Self-being is therefore not a spectator standing outside the universe. It is a generative point of awareness through which a local configuration of the universe becomes perceptible and responsive.
8.1 The Local Is Not Division, but a Focus of Tension
“There are as many observers as there are individuals in the universe.”
This modern formulation, often associated with physical observation, touches on a deeper philosophical question:
Is the world we experience a single unified reality existing as an independent whole, or does it become manifest through the different interfaces of Self-being?
Zizai Philosophy does not regard the universe as a whole subsequently divided into multiple parts.
Rather, the unfolding of Zizai becomes locally manifest where differences enter into relations of tension, forming particular focal configurations and structural interfaces.
The local is therefore not a fragment left behind after the whole has been broken apart.
It is a way in which the whole becomes locally manifest through its own relations of difference and tension.
Each Self-being is not a passive observer receiving a predetermined world.
It is a naturally arising responsive node within a field of interrelated differences—a local interface through which a particular configuration becomes perceptible and responsive.
It is not a perspective generated from outside the universe.
It is a mode in which the universe's own tensional relations become manifest as a relatively persistent configuration of awareness.
Therefore:
- The local is not division, but manifestation.
- Self-being is not the protagonist, but the focal point.
- The world is not a stage, but the local manifestation of relational structure.
Self-being is not an isolated island of selfhood.
It is a point where differences intersect and become perceptible as a particular configuration of awareness and relation.
What appears at such a point is never simply fixed. It can persist for a time while continuing to change through its relations with what surrounds it.
The local is therefore not separation from the whole.
It is one of the ways the whole becomes present.
8.2 The Self-being Interface: A Point of Perception within Generative Tension
Self-being, as the subjective focal point of local manifestation, is neither a sealed individual entity nor a sovereign center of the universe.
It is a focal point of awareness that emerges where differences become locally related within a field of Zizai's tension.
It experiences the generation of the universe and responds to its unfolding, but it does not govern the movement of the whole.
Rather, within its particular relations of tension, it becomes an interface through which differences can be perceived, related, and responded to.
This means:
- Self-being is not an omniscient sovereign, but a point of perception within unfolding.
- The universe is not created by Self-being, yet each local unfolding becomes manifest through the interface of Self-being.
- The reality experienced by Self-being is a relatively persistent configuration of relational tension at that particular interface.
In other words, Self-being is continuously generated while maintaining a recognizable continuity of awareness.
It has no absolute boundary, yet a local orientation of awareness can persist within a particular field of tension.
This does not make Self-being an independent substance.
Its continuity is relational.
Its perspective exists because a particular configuration of difference continues to sustain a recognizable interface through which awareness can occur.
Philosophical Dialogue · The Self-being Interface
In Being and Time, Heidegger's Dasein is not an isolated entity but being-in-the-world (In-der-Welt-sein): its way of being is inseparable from its relation with the world.
This helps illuminate Self-being not as a sovereign center standing over the world, but as a mode of openness and response within a particular relational configuration.
Merleau-Ponty likewise emphasizes the body not merely as a physical object but as the site of perception. The body is our primordial way of being in contact with the world, and space is therefore not simply an empty container but something lived through embodied relation.
Zizai Philosophy takes this relational insight further.
Self-being is not a “subject” standing opposite an “object” and looking at it.
It is a generative point at which the unfolding of Zizai becomes locally perceptible through relations of tension.
It is neither creator nor spectator.
It is a perceptual interface within the relational structure of the universe—continuously generated, continuously responsive, and continuously participating in the unfolding of difference.
Each local unfolding of Zizai becomes manifest through some particular interface of Self-being.
What we call “reality” is, in part, the relatively persistent configuration that becomes perceptible through such relational interfaces.
8.3 The Field of Tension: Stability within Change
Why can Self-being experience the world with a certain continuity even though its surrounding relations are continually changing?
Because a local configuration of tension can maintain a recognizable relational stability while continuing to change.
This is what we call a field of tension.
A field of tension is not a constant or unchanging force field.
It is a relational configuration in which differences continue to interact, resonate, shift, and generate recognizable patterns of stability.
When these relations change sharply, familiar configurations may become difficult to sustain. The continuity of experienced reality can then become disrupted, as in dreams, severe psychological disorganization, or fragmented states of consciousness.
When tensions become excessively rigid, by contrast, the sense of being may become mechanical and constrained. A person may become increasingly identified with fixed social roles or repetitive patterns of behavior, as in a life reduced to functioning as a social instrument.
Neither extreme should be understood simply as “failure to coordinate.”
The point is that a field of tension remains recognizable through an ongoing relation among differences.
Its stability does not come from being closed or self-sufficient.
It persists through continuing exchanges with the wider field of relations within which it is situated.
Thus:
- The point of tension in which Self-being is situated can register disturbances and responses arising through its relations with others.
- Every Self-being is a local manifestation of a wider field of interrelated tensions.
- The flow of the universe does not become manifest at one privileged location. It becomes locally manifest everywhere as a particular “here.”
Philosophical Dialogue · The Field of Tension and Dynamic Order
Deleuze's philosophy of generation emphasizes emergence: existence is not simply constructed upon a static structure, but arises through difference, repetition, and nonlinear interaction.
This resonates with the Zizai philosophical understanding of life as something that becomes manifest through relational tensions rather than through prior design.
From this perspective, the stability of a field of tension is not substantial stability.
It is a generative order—a recognizable configuration that persists while its relations continue to change.
Self-being is therefore not the bearer of an already stable structure.
It is a focal manifestation within continually changing tensions.
It perceives, responds, and feeds back into its relations with the surrounding field.
It does not govern the universe.
It participates in the way the universe becomes manifest here.
In summary, the stability of a field of tension is not a pre-existing reality.
It is a recognizable order that continues to arise within changing relations.
The continuity of Self-being is therefore not the uninterrupted persistence of an independent entity.
It is the persistence of a local relational configuration through which awareness continues to occur.
8.4 The Universe: Not a Substance, but a Network of Tensional Manifestations
From the perspective of Zizai Philosophy, the universe is neither an independent substantial whole existing outside Self-being nor a pre-given container of existence.
It is a generative network of interrelated fields of tension, in which each Self-being can be understood as a local manifestation of a particular configuration.
The “network of the universe” has several characteristics.
1. Mutual Resonance
A small change within one local configuration can produce responses elsewhere through its relations with other configurations.
The local and the wider field are therefore not two completely separate domains.
They remain related through continuing interaction and resonance.
2. Non-Centrality
The universe has no single ontological center.
Each focal point and each Self-being can temporarily function as a local center of experience within its particular configuration of tension.
A center is therefore a structural phenomenon, not an ontological starting point.
There is no privileged point from which the universe originates or through which the whole must be understood.
3. Non-Totality of Perspective
No Self-being can exhaust the totality of the universe's tensional relations.
What any Self-being experiences as “the universe” is necessarily a local manifestation through its own particular interface.
This does not make reality merely subjective.
It means that every perspective is situated.
4. Co-Manifestation
The order and persistence we observe in the universe do not depend upon a single point maintaining the whole.
They arise through countless relations among local configurations, each affecting and responding to others.
The universe is therefore a generative relational structure whose manifestations overlap, interact, and resonate across many local interfaces.
This means that the universe we call “the universe” is never simply a complete collection of things that can be grasped from one perspective.
It is a field moving through difference and tension, becoming locally manifest through countless interfaces.
What any Self-being experiences is a structural resonance of the universe at that particular interface—not the universe exhausted into a single final picture.
Philosophical Dialogue · A Non-Substantial Understanding of the Universe
Bataille understood the universe not as a stable entity but as a process of transition and generation, emphasizing forms of movement without a single center.
This resonates with the Zizai philosophical view that the universe is not fundamentally a collection of objects but a generative field in which different configurations become manifest through tension.
Deleuze and Guattari likewise challenge centralized structures and emphasize multiplicity, nonlinear relations, and generative networks.
The point of resonance with Zizai Philosophy is not that the universe forms a perfectly coordinated network.
Rather, it is that no single center is required for multiple local configurations to coexist, interact, and generate further manifestations.
The universe is therefore neither a container waiting to be unlocked nor a collection of entities waiting to be reduced to one final substance.
It is the ongoing co-manifestation of relational configurations across countless Self-being interfaces.
The universe is not “somewhere else.”
It is present wherever a local configuration of tension becomes manifest and perceptible.
8.5 Self-being and the Relational Configuration of Reality
What, then, is “reality”?
In Zizai Philosophy, reality is not a fixed and independent truth waiting somewhere outside experience to be discovered.
Nor is it a final destination or ultimate foundation.
Reality is the relatively persistent relational configuration through which multiple fields of tension can continue to interact, resonate, and remain intelligible to one another.
When multiple Self-being interfaces participate in sufficiently persistent relations, the world can appear as something shareable, measurable, and open to reasoning.
This shared persistence is part of what we call reality.
Reality does not become real because some external authority declares it so.
Nor does it become real simply because one individual experiences it.
Its persistence arises through relations that remain sufficiently coherent across multiple interfaces of awareness.
When those relations change radically—when differences become sharply amplified, familiar feedback loops break down, or previously persistent configurations can no longer be sustained—the continuity of experienced reality can become disrupted.
Experience may then become fragmented, meanings may lose their familiar coherence, and previously stable structures of understanding may no longer hold.
The point is therefore not that reality has “failed to coordinate.”
Rather:
- Reality is not a static truth existing independently of all relations; it is a relatively persistent configuration within ongoing generation.
- Truth is not a final answer about the world; it is a form of understanding that remains resonant across multiple relational interfaces.
Truth does not exist somewhere beyond the present, waiting at the end of a process.
It becomes manifest here, wherever multiple perspectives can continue to resonate without being forced into identity.
What we call truth is therefore not necessarily the most complete or highest possible answer.
It is a structural resonance that remains viable across differences.
Philosophical Dialogue · Reality and Truth as Resonance
Heidegger's analysis of Being and disclosure challenges the idea that reality is simply a collection of objects standing fully formed before us.
Wittgenstein, particularly in Philosophical Investigations, emphasizes that meaning arises through use within forms of life.
These perspectives help loosen the distinction between a supposedly pure external reality and a purely subjective construction.
Zizai Philosophy similarly understands reality as neither an external object nor an arbitrary projection of the individual.
It is a relational manifestation arising through the continuing interaction of multiple interfaces of awareness.
The shareability of reality does not require every Self-being to point toward an identical object conceived independently of all relations.
It requires patterns of relation that remain sufficiently resonant across Self-being interfaces.
Reality is therefore a continuing relational manifestation.
Truth is a form of resonance within that manifestation.
Neither is an external object.
Neither is merely a private construction.
Both are traces of how Zizai continues to unfold through relations among Self-beings.
8.6 Summary: Local Manifestation as a Field of Co-Generative Tension
This chapter establishes several core points:
- The universe is not an independent substance existing outside Self-being. It is a generative relational field in which Zizai becomes locally manifest through countless configurations of tension. The universe experienced by each Self-being is a local resonance of this wider unfolding.
- Self-being is neither an isolated consciousness nor an ontological sovereign. It is a focal point of awareness arising within a configuration of tension. It perceives, responds, and participates in the continuing manifestation of the universe.
- The stability of a field of tension does not come from control or closure. It arises as recognizable relational configurations persist while differences continue to interact and change.
- Locality is not a limitation imposed upon Zizai. It is one of the basic ways Zizai becomes manifest. The universe does not radiate outward from one absolute center; it becomes locally present through countless relational focal points.
Therefore:
The universe is not a collection of things.
It is not a projection of consciousness.
It is a field of co-generative tension through which Zizai becomes manifest across multiple local relations.
And Self-being is not an observer standing outside the universe.
It is one local mode through which the universe becomes perceptible to itself.
Self-being is neither an all-knowing subject nor a passive object.
It is a generative interface through which the tensions of the universe become locally manifest, experienced, and responsive.
The local does not stand apart from the whole.
It is the whole becoming present in a particular configuration.
