— How Time, Space, and Energy Emerge within Zizai
Space is not a container. Time is not passage. Energy is not a driving force.
They are structural traces of Zizai as it unfolds—the ways in which difference, tension, relation, and structure become manifest within its unfolding.
Zizai has no pre-given dimensions. It does not unfold within time, occupy space, or move by means of energy. Yet, within its beginningless and endless unfolding, when differences become locally manifest and tension takes structural form, time, space, and energy emerge as three fundamental modes through which that unfolding can be discerned.
They are not settings outside Zizai, nor entities added to it. They arise within Zizai, wherever difference becomes manifest as local tension. They are neither background nor framework nor substance, but something closer to a grammar disclosed in unfolding.
This chapter explores how time emerges as rhythm within difference, how space takes form through the co-presence of tension, and how energy appears as the continuing expression of tensional difference. Together, they are three basic structural resonances through which the unfolding of Zizai becomes perceptible.
7.1 Not Designed, but Manifest through Difference
Once we set aside the idea that the universe follows a blueprint, we need to reconsider the structures that have long been treated as given: Why is there time? Why is there space? Why does energy behave as it does?
Within traditional teleological and substantialist frameworks, these questions are often answered by treating time, space, and energy as intrinsic laws or pre-existing structures of nature. Zizai Philosophy takes a different approach.
Time, space, and energy are not dimensions that precede Zizai. Nor are they substantial properties subsequently attached to it.
They emerge within Zizai's own unfolding as differences enter into relations of tension and take on structural form.
When differences become locally manifest within a configuration of tension, time, space, and energy do not arrive as additional dimensions. They appear as different structural modes of the same unfolding: ways in which difference persists, coexists, and transforms within a particular configuration.
We may understand them in this way:
- Space is the extension that becomes manifest when multiple differences are co-present within a configuration.
- Time is the rhythm that becomes manifest when differences remain distinct within an unfolding.
- Energy is the continuing expression of tensional difference as a configuration changes.
They are therefore neither “before” Zizai nor “outside” it. They are structural traces arising within the beginningless and endless unfolding of Zizai wherever difference becomes manifest.
They are not settings, but manifestations; not tools, but traces; not planned mechanisms, but structural resonances of generation itself.
7.2 Time: Not Passage, but the Rhythm of Difference
Time is not an independently existing medium flowing somewhere outside existence.
It is not a stage on which events take place, nor a container through which existence must pass.
Its significance lies not in “passage,” but in the rhythm through which differences remain distinct within unfolding.
In this sense:
- Where no difference is manifest within a given configuration, temporal distinction does not arise.
- Where difference becomes manifest, tension takes on a relational rhythm, and distinctions such as “before” and “after” become discernible.
- Time is the structural trace of differences that do not coincide within a single configuration.
We do not simply live inside an independently existing time. We inhabit configurations of unfolding in which differences persist through distinct relations and sequences.
This helps explain why the past cannot simply be changed and the future cannot simply be known in advance. The point is not that “time” imposes a limitation on existence. Rather, the configuration itself carries a rhythm in which some differences have already become manifest while others have not yet become manifest.
Directionality does not come from a pre-existing temporal axis. It arises from the relational structure of difference itself.
Thus, time is not a thing that flows. It is the rhythm through which difference continues to unfold without collapsing into simultaneity.
Philosophical Resonance · On the Non-Substantiality of Time
From the perspective that time is not a self-existing flow, Zizai Philosophy enters into a productive dialogue with several philosophical traditions.
Augustine, in Confessions, reflected on the peculiar status of past, present, and future: the past is no longer present, the future is not yet present, while what we experience is the continuity of the present. His reflections already point toward time as a structure of experience rather than simply an external substance.
Madhyamaka philosophy, particularly Nāgārjuna's analysis of the three times, questions the independent self-nature of past, present, and future. Time appears relationally rather than as a self-existing entity.
Zizai Philosophy takes a related but distinct position:
Time is neither substance, nor passage, nor stage. It is the rhythmic trace of difference within the unfolding of Zizai.
We do not first enter time and then unfold. Rather, temporal distinction becomes manifest within unfolding wherever differences remain distinct in relation.
7.3 Space: Not a Container, but a Configuration of Co-Present Tension
Space is not an empty box containing things.
It is not a background location that exists before whatever comes to occupy it, nor a fixed framework within which objects are assigned positions.
From the perspective of Zizai Philosophy, space emerges through the co-presence of differences within a configuration of tension. It is not a substance, but a structural interface through which relations among differences become manifest.
Several features are fundamental here:
- Co-presence: multiple points of tension can be manifest within the same configuration without collapsing into one another.
- Relational direction: each difference unfolds according to its own relational configuration, intersecting with others without becoming identical to them.
- Compatibility: differences can coexist within a configuration without requiring that they become the same.
Space can therefore be understood not as an abstract dimension imposed upon existence, but as the relational configuration disclosed through the co-presence of multiple tensions.
A coordinate point is not simply “somewhere.” It expresses a relative relation between one configuration and others.
Space is therefore not merely where things are. It is the structural relation through which differences become co-present and distinguishable.
It is not a stage for entities, but a manifestation of their relations.
Philosophical Resonance · The Relational Nature of Space
Leibniz famously challenged Newton's conception of absolute space, arguing that space is better understood through the relational order among things rather than as an independent container.
Zizai Philosophy goes further in a different direction: space is not only a relation among things. It is a configuration that emerges as differences and tensions become co-present within unfolding.
In the Zhuangzi, the distinction between “this” and “that” already points toward the relational character of position, boundary, and perspective. Difference itself makes discernment possible.
From this perspective, space is not a pre-existing three-dimensional expanse. It is the structural expression of difference becoming co-present.
Space is not an empty place waiting for objects. It is a configuration formed through the relations among differences as they unfold together.
It is not an entity, but a trace of relational formation; not a positional frame, but a field of relations; not a container, but a structural manifestation of co-presence.
7.4 Energy: Not Fuel, but the Continuing Expression of Tensional Difference
Energy is not a kind of fuel that pushes matter into motion.
Nor is it an external force injected into things, or an independently existing substance behind change.
From the structural perspective of Zizai Philosophy, energy names the continuing expression of tensional difference within unfolding.
- Where differences remain dynamically distinct within a configuration, tension can persist as movement, fluctuation, transformation, or potential change.
- What we call conservation of energy can be understood, at the philosophical level, as a continuity within the transformations of a relational configuration rather than as an externally imposed principle.
- What we describe as entropy can likewise be approached not simply as a fall into disorder, but as changes in the distribution, relation, and complexity of differences within unfolding.
Energy, in this sense, is not a resource waiting to be consumed. It is a manifestation of ongoing tensional difference.
As configurations change, what appears as energy may be expressed through different structural forms. A configuration may become more stable in one relation while new differences become manifest elsewhere. Tension does not need to be imagined as something awaiting final resolution. Its continuing transformation is itself part of unfolding.
Energy is therefore not an engine driving one thing toward another.
It is the continuing trace of change within a configuration whose differences remain dynamically related.
It is not a motor, but a signal; not an external force, but an expression of structural transformation; not a stored substance behind unfolding, but something discernible through unfolding itself.
Philosophical Resonance · The Non-Substantiality of Energy
Heraclitus' use of fire as a philosophical image was not simply a claim about physical matter. Fire expressed continuous transformation, tension, and change.
This resonates with the Zizai philosophical understanding of energy as the expression of ongoing tensional difference: not a thing in itself, but a way of describing transformation within structure.
Classical Chinese thought likewise contains images of movement and transformation through concepts such as qi, emptiness, fullness, and dynamic balance. Zizai Philosophy does not treat qi as an independent substance. Instead, it can be read as an image for the dynamic expression of difference within an unfolding configuration.
Thus, energy is not what drives existence from outside.
It is how continuing difference becomes perceptible in transformation.
It is not a resource, but a manifestation; not an external force, but a structural resonance; not a final measure of a process, but an expression of its ongoing transformation.
7.5 Time, Space, and Energy: Three Modes of Structural Relation
Time, space, and energy are not three independent substances or three dimensions imposed upon Zizai.
They are three related ways in which differences become structurally manifest within local unfolding.
| Dimension | Structural basis | Manifestation | Mode of relation |
| Time | Differences remaining distinct | sequence, duration, rhythm | temporal differentiation and memory |
| Space | Multiple differences co-present | distance, position, direction | relational configuration and extension |
| Energy | Continuing tensional difference | movement, fluctuation, transformation | interaction and structural change |
Time expresses the rhythm of differences that do not coincide within a single configuration.
Space expresses the relational configuration through which multiple differences become co-present.
Energy expresses the continuing transformation of tensional difference.
These three are therefore not additions to Zizai and not purposes imposed upon its unfolding. They are three interrelated structural expressions through which local configurations of difference can be perceived.
They reveal modes of relation within the structural world; they do not define the nature of Zizai itself.
What we call the “three dimensions” is therefore not a foundation beneath Zizai. It is a local structural configuration arising within its unfolding.
Zizai itself is not bound by dimensions. Dimensions arise within it, and particular dimensional configurations can change, dissolve, or reorganize within the continuing unfolding of Zizai.
Philosophical Resonance · Dimensions Are Not Preconditions of Zizai
Merleau-Ponty understood space not as a container occupied by things, but as a field emerging through the relation between perception and embodiment.
Whitehead's process philosophy likewise treats temporal order not as an independently flowing substance, but as something constituted through relations among events.
Both approaches loosen the assumption that time and space are external settings.
Zizai Philosophy extends this questioning to energy as well.
When we speak of “energy flowing,” we are describing transformations within relations of tension. The language of energy identifies a structural pattern within unfolding; it does not require energy to exist as an independent substance.
Thus:
Time, space, and energy are not dimensions constituting Zizai.
They are local structural modes through which Zizai's unfolding becomes manifest and available to awareness.
Zizai has no dimension in itself. It is not situated within time, contained by space, or sustained by energy. Dimensions are modes that emerge within particular configurations of its beginningless and endless unfolding.
7.6 Reconsidering the Philosophical Status of “Dimension”
In Zizai Philosophy, “dimension” does not refer to a hierarchy of higher and lower realities, nor to a ladder leading toward transcendence.
Dimensions are not levels assigned to reality, nor structures from which existence must eventually escape.
A dimension is a way in which Zizai manifests its organization within a local configuration of tension: something that can become perceptible, relational, and inhabitable.
It is not a limitation imposed upon existence, but a form in which existence becomes manifest.
- Dimensions are not conditions to escape, but configurations in which unfolding takes place.
- They are not the limitations of an individual, but modes through which existence becomes structured.
- Freedom does not require leaving dimensions behind. It lies in allowing difference to unfold within a dimension without mistaking the dimension for the whole of existence.
Time makes sequence and continuity perceptible.
Space makes relations and distributions perceptible.
Energy makes transformation and continuing change perceptible.
None of these externally defines existence. Each is a local expression of how existence appears within unfolding.
When a living being can remain with temporal rhythm without being consumed by it, inhabit spatial difference without reducing difference to exclusion, and experience energetic change without treating transformation itself as a threat, dimension no longer appears simply as a constraint.
It becomes part of the field in which difference can be experienced and unfolding can take place.
Philosophical Resonance · Dwelling Rather Than Escape
Heidegger's notion of dwelling emphasizes that human existence is not simply located somewhere within space. To dwell is to participate in a way of being within the world.
This resonates with Merleau-Ponty's understanding of the body-world relation: space is not a blank container outside us, but part of the structure through which perception and existence become possible.
Zizai Philosophy takes this further:
Time, space, and energy are not external frameworks imposed upon Zizai. They are structural traces through which Zizai's differences become manifest within particular configurations.
They do not govern existence from outside, nor define the whole of life.
Freedom, therefore, is not escape from dimension.
It is not mistaking a particular dimensional configuration for an absolute boundary of existence.
A dimension is not a prison. It is a structural interface within unfolding.
7.7 The Nonlinear Unfolding of Dimensions
The manifestation of dimensions is neither a hierarchy descending from above nor a linear sequence generated from within.
Time, space, and energy are not pre-given coordinates with fixed starting points and endpoints. Nor do they arise one after another as stages in a sequence.
They emerge together within multiple relations of tension, each revealing different aspects of the same unfolding.
They are neither independent nor sequential. They are interrelated structural expressions within local configurations.
They do not constitute an ultimate coordinate system—a map of the universe—but relative configurations through which Zizai becomes locally manifest.
Dimension is not the foundation of the world. Dimension is the trace of tension.
The unfolding of dimensions is therefore fundamentally nonlinear:
- Time is not a one-way flow, but the rhythm that becomes manifest when differences remain distinct within unfolding.
- Space is not a static container, but the relational configuration disclosed when multiple differences are co-present.
- Energy is not merely a quantity flowing from one place to another, but the dynamic expression of continuing tensional difference and transformation.
Dimension is therefore neither sequence nor hierarchy.
It is a field of interrelated structural relations continually manifesting within unfolding.
There is no need to posit a beginning or predetermined endpoint for this dimensionality. There is only the continuing articulation of difference, relation, structure, and unfolding.
Dimension Is Not a Map, but a Grammar of Unfolding
If Zizai is understood as an endless process of generation, dimensions are not a map of its contents. They are part of the grammar through which particular configurations become manifest.
They do not simply tell us where something is or when something occurs. They reveal how difference becomes relationally structured.
The dimensional experience of any living being therefore depends on the complexity and configuration of the tensions within which its awareness is situated.
A being is not simply born “inside” a dimension as though dimension were an external container.
Rather, as its relations unfold, particular dimensional patterns become manifest.
For example:
- In a relatively simple relational configuration, temporal rhythm may appear repetitive, cyclical, or slow.
- In a highly differentiated configuration, spatial relations may appear as overlapping interfaces, shifts, and multiple forms of co-presence.
- In a system of many interacting relations, transformation may exhibit complex patterns of circulation, reversal, rupture, and reconfiguration.
In this sense, what is sometimes called a “higher dimension” need not refer to a higher realm or an ascent beyond the present.
It can instead refer to a more complex configuration of tension and a more differentiated mode of relation.
The movement is not necessarily upward.
It is a change in configuration.
It is not departure from one world toward another, but a different way in which difference, relation, and structure become manifest.
“Dimensional Transition” Is a Shift in Awareness
In individual experience, what may be called a “dimensional transition” need not mean travelling through some ontological hierarchy.
It can mean a change in the way awareness apprehends its own relations of tension.
When a being becomes aware of:
- how its existence participates in temporal rhythm,
- how its relations take spatial form,
- how its transformations are expressed through energy,
its mode of awareness itself has changed.
The significant shift is not arrival at a new dimension.
It is no longer mistaking dimension for an absolute boundary, tension for an obstacle, or difference for separation.
Zizai's unfolding does not require transcendence.
It is already taking place here, within the particular configuration of existence.
What changes is how that configuration is perceived, inhabited, and related to.
Dimension is therefore not a ladder to somewhere else.
It is a generative rhythm through which difference becomes perceptible here and now.
7.8 Summary: What Emerges within Zizai Is Not Structure, but the Possibility of Generation
Zizai does not unfold in order to produce structure.
Within its unfolding, structural possibilities become manifest wherever differences enter into relation and tension.
Time, space, and energy are therefore not pre-given components of the universe, nor fixed dimensions imposed from outside.
They are three interrelated modes through which tensional difference becomes structurally perceptible.
They are not “parts of existence,” but ways in which existence becomes manifest in unfolding.
They are not basic ingredients of things, but structural expressions of difference and tension.
They are not a background stage holding everything else, but part of the relational grammar through which existence takes form.
They are not obstacles that existence must transcend, but dimensions within which existence is already unfolding.
In this sense:
- They arise through difference and provide forms through which difference can remain manifest.
- They appear as constraints, yet those constraints also create interfaces through which relations become discernible.
- They are not prisons, but fields of generation.
- They are not the essence of the universe, but traces left by Zizai's unfolding within particular configurations of tension.
What emerges within Zizai is therefore not a predetermined structure.
It is the possibility of generation itself.
Our existence is one local manifestation of that possibility: a continuing configuration of difference, tension, relation, awareness, and unfolding.
Dimensions are thus not the pre-existing grid of the physical world.
They are ways in which relational structure becomes manifest within local configurations of tension.
And this opens the way to the next question:
At the intersection of these structural modes, how does a particular local interface of existence become manifest?
This is where Self-being enters the picture—the local interface through which a configuration of tension becomes aware of its own unfolding.
The universe is therefore not merely a passive totality of things arranged within pre-existing dimensions.
It is a generative field in which each Self-being participates in, responds to, and experiences a local configuration of Zizai's unfolding.
